Insomnia Self-Assessment: Are my sleep issues really a problem?
You may find yourself thinking, everyone has trouble sleeping at times, how do I know if it is a problem?
According to the DSM5-TR Insomnia is defined as:
Dissatisfaction with sleep quantity or quality associated with (one or more) of the following: (1) difficulty falling asleep (2) difficulty maintaining sleep and/or (3) problems with early morning awakenings without the ability to return to sleep.
These issues must occur 3 or more days per week over the course of 3 months to be defined as chronic.
here must also be an aspect of functional impairment. For example, your work performance is suffering because of your sleep (e.g., missed meetings, deadlines, poor performance). For others they may notice that they are not able to show up in their relationships how they would like (e.g., a pattern of turning down invitations with friends due to fatigue).
It is important to note that these issues occur despite opportunities for sleep and cannot be better explained by a different disorder.
If this sounds like you, I encourage you to complete the following self-assessment.
